Nepal Medical College (NMC) started the MBBS program in 1997 December and since then has admitted 1239 students out of which 709 have graduated and the remaining 530 students are studying in different years of five & half years MBBS program. NMC has 900 beds where clinical experiences in different branches of medicine are acquired by the medical students. It is affiliation to Kathmandu University and recognized by Nepal Medical Council. The MBBS program of NMC is also recognized by Sri Lanka Medical and Dental council.
Since February 2009 NMC has been recognized by Nepal Medical Council for the post graduate programs of Kathmandu University and is in running post graduate MD/MS Programs in 12 disciplines.
NMC is starting BDS program from this academic year beginning in September 2011 and has been affiliated to Kathmandu University and is recognized by Nepal Medical Council for the BDS program.
Nepal Medical College has faculty and facilities in all the basic medical and dental sciences departments required for the BDS program.
It is 4½+1 year academic program and follows the BDS curriculum of Kathmandu University. In the BDS curriculum,subjects are taught in the form of lectures and demonstrations. In addition to this, students also attend lectures, demonstrations and clinics in General Medicine and General Surgery in Third year. This course as a whole is amalgamation of Basic Sciences,Clinical Dentistry with Practical and Laboratory Skills development.Students in first two years will be exposed to basic sciences(anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology) common to MBBS and BDS programs of Kathmandu University at the respective departments of NMC along with Preclinical Conservative Dentistry, Preclinical Prosthodontics, Oral Biology and Community Dentistry which will go side by side at the respective departments which are situated at NMC premises. During the third year students will be exposed to clinical experience in all the dental specialties along with internal medicine and general surgery in the res-pective departments of NMC.
Dental hospital is functional as a separate dental wing of NMC where the students will acquire hands on dental skills from third year onwards. Extension of the dental hospital will take place over the period of 4 years by which time a total of 120 dental chairs will be made available to students for acquiring hands on dental skills.
Students who pass KUMET 2011 can apply to NMC in the BDS program. In addition, those nominated by the MOE for the BDS program shall also be eligible for the program. Non-residential/ international students shall be admitted as per K.U. criteria.

The registered Dental Surgeons in Nepal is 693, according to Nepal Dental Association registration which makes the figure of 1dentist per 43,290 people which WHO recommends for being 1:1000. This elaborates on the scope of BDS program.The dental graduates have the scope to work in government health services, private sectors including clinics and hospitals, at universities, educational institutions related to health sciences, medical colleges, dental colleges, military and police health services and other non-government organizations. Besides the dental surgeons can also be involved in academic programs after pursuing post-graduate degrees and be involved in public dental health programs, marketing, and related information and communication fields. Presently there is a great demandfor qualified dentists both within the country and outside. Kathmandu University has provision for Dental graduates to pursue post graduate MD/MS in Anatomy, Physiology,Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pharmacology and has thereby
opened the faculty positions in the above mentioned subjects to BDS graduates at par with MBBS graduates.
The academic calendar for the academic session shall begin in September. Each academic year has two semesters of six months. Each semester consists of teaching learning activities together with formative and summative examinations. At the end of the first year, the first BDS university examination shall take place.
Daily working hours
During the six working days (Sunday to Friday) ,the working hours will be from 9 am to 4 pm with one hour lunch break from 1300-1400 hours.
CODSH-NMC has its own uniform code for dental students and is compulsory for attending classes and examination including college functions and while representing NMC outside.
Hostel is compulsory for all CODSH-NMC students and hostel facility for both boys and girls is available.
The CODSH-NMC has a very good setup with sitting arrangements available for 400 persons at one point in time and has over ten thousand volumes of books consisting of around 1400 titles both for students and the faculties. Important medical and dental journals published both in Nepal and outside are available in the NMC library which also has a provision for e-library facilities as well as Wi-Fi system.
